# Upstream Metrics

Track your business visibility **before** traditional analytics begin.

## What Are Upstream Metrics?

Traditional analytics (Google Analytics, Yelp Insights) start tracking when someone **clicks** on your business. But what about all the times AI assistants **mention** your business without a click?

**Upstream metrics** capture this invisible visibility:

* 🔍 **Impressions**: AI mentioned your business in a response
* 📝 **Citations**: AI quoted or referenced your business
* ⚖️ **Comparisons**: Your business appeared in side-by-side comparisons
* 👁️ **Zero-Click**: Users saw your business but didn't click (brand awareness)

## Why This Matters

### The AI Discovery Difference

**Traditional Analytics**: Only sees the 1 booking click\
**AIDP Platform**: Sees all 10 mentions + 1 booking = Complete visibility

**With AIDP**: You see all 10 mentions, not just the 1 booking.

### Real Impact

Businesses using upstream metrics see:

* **3x better conversion rates** from AI traffic vs traditional
* **Higher quality leads** (pre-qualified through conversation)
* **Shorter sales cycles** (customers arrive more informed)
* **Better ROI** (understand full visibility, not just clicks)

## Metrics Explained

### Impressions

**What it is**: Your business appeared in an AI response.

**Example**:

```
User: "Coffee shops in Portland with outdoor seating"
AI: "I recommend checking out Artisan Coffee Roasters,
     Blue Star Donuts, and Stumptown Coffee..."
Your business = 1 impression
```

**Why it matters**: Even without a click, the user now knows your business exists. That's brand awareness.

**In your dashboard**:

* Total impressions this month
* Impression context (what AI said about you)
* Trend over time
* Impressions per query type

### Citations

**What it is**: AI quoted or specifically referenced your business.

**Example**:

```
User: "Tell me more about Artisan Coffee Roasters"
AI: "Artisan Coffee Roasters is known for their single-origin
     beans sourced directly from Colombian farmers. They roast
     small batches twice weekly..."
Your business = 1 citation (primary placement)
```

**Citation Quality**:

* **Primary**: Main focus of response (3x conversion rate)
* **Secondary**: Mentioned alongside others (1.5x conversion rate)
* **Tertiary**: Brief mention (1x baseline conversion rate)

**Why it matters**: Citations indicate strong relevance and build credibility. Primary citations convert at 3x the rate of tertiary citations.

**In your dashboard**:

* Total citations
* Citation placement breakdown
* Citation context
* Citation-to-conversion rate

### Comparisons

**What it is**: Your business appeared in a side-by-side comparison.

**Example**:

```
User: "Compare Artisan Coffee Roasters and Stumptown Coffee"
AI: [Provides detailed comparison table]
Your business = 1 comparison appearance
```

**Tracked data**:

* How many comparisons you appeared in
* Who you were compared against
* Your position in comparisons
* Win rate (when you were recommended)

**Why it matters**: Comparisons indicate high purchase intent. Users are close to deciding.

**In your dashboard**:

* Total comparison appearances
* Most common competitors
* Average position
* Win rate percentage

### Zero-Click Visibility

**What it is**: User saw your business in AI response but didn't click or book.

**Example**:

```
User: "Coffee shops in Portland"
AI: "Artisan Coffee Roasters is highly rated..."
User: "Actually, I'll go to the one closer to me"
Result: You got brand awareness but no click
```

**Why it matters**:

* Brand awareness has value (estimated $0.50-$5 per impression)
* User may return later
* Word-of-mouth potential
* Top-of-mind awareness

**In your dashboard**:

* Zero-click impressions
* Estimated brand awareness value
* Reach (unique users)
* Recall rate (users who return later)

### Share of Voice

**What it is**: Your percentage of total mentions in your category.

**Example**:

```
Coffee shops in Portland mentioned this month:
- Artisan Coffee Roasters: 450 mentions (30%)
- Stumptown Coffee: 600 mentions (40%)
- Blue Star Donuts: 300 mentions (20%)
- Others: 150 mentions (10%)
Your share of voice = 30%
```

**Why it matters**: Indicates competitive positioning and market presence.

**In your dashboard**:

* Your share percentage
* Category average
* Top competitors
* Trend over time

* Users arrive more qualified (pre-screened by AI)
* Shorter sales cycles (already researched)
* Higher average order value

**Focus on**:

* Citation quality (primary > secondary > tertiary)
* Comparison win rate (not just appearances)
* Intent strength (high-intent queries)
* Journey efficiency (fewer touchpoints to conversion)

### Conversion Multiplier

Track how AI traffic performs vs traditional:
